Backyard Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Do you want to start your own backyard vegetable garden? With the easy access of information, people are aware of the harmful effects of pesticides and fertilizers on our body which we consume through day to day vegetables. The concept of eating organic is spreading a lot and many people prefer to sow easy growing vegetables at home. If you want to start growing vegetables in your backyard then there are few steps you should consider as a beginner:

1. Sunny Spot: Choose a sunny spot because most of the plants require 6-8 hours of sunlight.

2. Use seeds from home: A lot of vegetables can be grown from the seeds of their current vegetables. Initially start slow and use seeds available at home to practice growing vegetables.

3. Water drainage and retention: Your planting pots should have proper drainage for the water to flow out. If the water accumulates it can lead to rotting of the roots. If your planting pots don’t have drainage holes at their base then make sure to drill one and cover them with rocks for a slow drainage of water. This will help the soil to absorb water required and let the excess water flow out.

4. Space: Some vegetables require a lot of space to grow while some can be grown in a small pot as well. Make sure of the growth of the roots of your plants because if the roots don’t have enough space to spread then it might not bear vegetables. Always be aware of when to repot the plant to a bigger pot.

5. Don’t overwater: Overwatering is generally the main reason a plant cannot survive. As a new gardener we tend to overwater plants as we are not able to judge if they require water on a daily basis or more than once a day. Research on the quantity of water required for individual plants and always test the soil before giving it more water.

6. Nutrients: Make sure to include everything in your potting mix. Plants require nutrients along with sunlight and water. Your soil should not have small stones in it and it should have a mix of compost to provide nutrients to the plants.

7. Persistence: Remember, not every attempt will be a successful one. Each plant requires a different quantity of water, sunlight and nutrients. If they receive more than their requirement they might not survive or be able to bear vegetables. In order to excel and understand the art of growing vegetables it is important to be persistent even if you don’t succeed in the first few trials.

8. Vegetables Choice: Grow vegetables according to their season. The weather contributes while growing a vegetable and if the weather is appropriate then the plant can thrive easily.

These are some of the few points you should consider as a beginner gardener. As you practice you will understand the requirements of individual plants and you can grow them easily without investing a lot of time on the research. Hope you found this article useful.
